About the New Forest Livestock Society

The NFLS was formed in 2002 under the Chairmanship of Mr John Burry, ex official Verderer of the New Forest Verderers. Four directors and eight committee members were selected from commoners who exercised common rights to organise and manage the pony sales at Beaulieu Road.  Since then the Society has gone from strength to strength electing committee members who bring a wealth of knowledge to the Society.

The NFLS is a company limited by guarantee,  and works closly with the New Forest Trust (NFT) who manage its lease and with the Forestry Commission (FC) and some of its other financial arrangements while continuing to work with its founder organisations where required.

A 25-year lease was granted to the NFLS from the FCvia the NFT  This was to enable the society to organise a minimum of five sales per year, on behalf of the New Forest Commoners. This could also include attendance of approved trade stalls on the day of the sale only. The NFLS now run the sale yard, provide stewards for the sales and keep a maintenance schedule in place with the sales run in association with Southern Counties Auctioneers.

Our traditional open air sale yard of 50 years standing was reconstructed in 2002, with further improvements in 2011, and again in 2013 completing the upgrade. It complies with all current Health and Safety and welfare legislation applicable to such facilities.

The sale yard has long been recognised as one of the safest and most efficient sale yards for semi-feral stock in the country, being constructed throughout with timber and having earth and gravel floors.  The continued maintenance of the premises is a major priority of the Society to ensure it remains in optimum condition and our health and safety  standards are maintained.

The code of practice for sales is strictly observed and all handlers are experienced stockmen. The sales are routinely monitored throughout by the RSPCA, ILPH, BHS, DEFRA and Hampshire CC Trading Standards inspectorate who ensure that all welfare and health and safety regulations are met.

The sales usually take place May, September, October and November.  Please see sale dates tab for exact dates.
